He won the men's triathlon at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games before turning his attention to the longer Ironman distances. He has won 3 Ironman World Championships - 2015, 2016 and 2019 together with 2 70.3 (Half Iron Man) World Championships in 2015 and 2018.
in 2016 in Roth, Germany in front of 260,000 fans who lined the course, he broke the world record in a staggering time of 7 hours 35 minutes and 39 seconds. His splits of the 3 phases (swim, bike, run) demonstrate his phenomenal all -round athletic ability - 2.5 mile swim in 45:22 minutes, 125 mile bike in 4:09:22 followed by a full marathon run in 2:40:35 - astonishing!
