Saracens faced Europe’s eternal bridesmaids Clermont Auvergne in the final at Murrayfield in Edinburgh with Clermont’s thousands of passionate fans dreaming of finally winning the biggest prize in European Club Rugby.
Many experts predicted a titanic struggle with Saracens withstanding Clermont’s power early on and using their experience to edge across the line in the final quarter. However it was Saracens who roared into an early lead with 2 early tries from Chris Ashton and George Kruis.
Clermont followed with 2 tries of their own through Remi Lamerat and Nick Abendanon and the game hung in balance with less than 10 minutes of the match remaining. Saracens finally made their territorial dominance count with a try from Alex Goode with 8 minutes left on the clock. A further penalty from Owen Farrell sealed the win for Saracens and with it their 2nd successive European Title.
Saracens boast a formidable line up – with 6 of their international stars selected for the 2017 British & Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand – Billy Vunipola, Mako Vunipola, Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell, Jamie George & George Kruis.
