Rossi started on the world championship ladder in 1996, riding an Aprilia for Scuderia AGV in the 125cc class at the age of 17. After taking a win in his debut season he clinched the title the following year (1997) with an impressive 11 wins from a possible 15 races, this time riding for the Nastro Azzuro team. Valentino stayed with Nastro Azzurro and Aprilia as he graduated to the 250cc class, scoring 14 victories in his 2 year assault which saw him clinch the 1999, 250cc championship.
Nastro Azzurro took Rossi to the sports premier, 500cc class the following year, but this time riding for Honda on a customer machine. In his first year in the class, he managed to win 2 of the 16 races which led to him finishing as the championship runner up to Kenny Roberts Jr, as a ‘rookie’. Following his strong debut season in the 500cc class, Rossi went on to take the championship the proceeding year (2001) in dominant fashion winning 11 races.
In 2002, the Sports top class changed from 500cc to MotoGP and a whole new era began. Rossi had signed for the factory Honda team so now had one of the top teams behind him – and it showed, as he went on to win the 2002 and 2003 MotoGP championships with the team. 2004 saw Rossi swap to the factory Yamaha team, in which he then won the 2004 and 2005 championships. Valentino’s winning streak would come to an end in 2006, finishing runner up to Nicky Hayden, but he stayed with Yamaha on a long term deal. Winning numerous races every season, Rossi had to wait until 2008 to claim yet another championship title, which was quickly followed by his 7th, and final premier class world title in 2009.
