Jean Van de Velde Carnoustie 1999

Eccentric French golfer Jean van de Velde still manages to smile as his hopes of winning the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie sink in the waters of the Barry Burn on the 18th hole. A double bogey would have been enough for Van de Velde as he carried a 3 shot lead up the final hole. However golf’s own tragi-comedy unfolded in front of the watching millions as he climbed into the burn in a desperate attempt to save his Open dream. He eventually carded a triple bogey to join eventual winner Paul Lawrie in a play-off.
