Doug Sanders lost the competition at the 18th hole when his putting across the green known as the 'Valley of Sin' cost him several shots. It was Jack Nicklaus' second British Open title and he won again in 1978. The Royal and Ancient golf club at St Andrews was founded in 1754 and recognised as the Governing Authority on the rules of the game in 1897.
