A stunning montage to celebrate England’s momentous 2015 Ashes Series victory. Going into the series as massive underdogs England defied their doubters and outplayed Australia over the 5 test matches.
The series will be remembered for the huge changes in momentum and the dramatic shifts in the fortunes of each team. England started the series with a dominant display in Cardiff with Joe Root and Ben Stokes rescuing England on the first morning where they lost 3 early wickets. Australian keeper Brad Haddin dropped Joe Root before he had got off the mark with commentators suggesting he may just have dropped the Ashes. This proved prophetic as Joe Root went on to score a century laying the platform for England’s crucial opening test win.
Fortunes we completely reversed at Lords where Australia compiled a huge 1st innings score thanks mainly to their veteran opener Chris Rogers and their #1 ranked batsman Steve Smith who scored a double century. England crumbled under the weight of scoreboard pressure and the lightning pace and aggression of Mitchell Johnson – losing by a monumental 405 runs.
With the series level at 1-1 the sides headed north to Edgbaston where a raucous crowd and a more seamer friendly English wicket awaited them. Nobody could have predicted the dramatic events that followed – England ripped through the Australian batting line up thanks to their king of swing Jimmy Anderson who was the star performer on day 1 as Australia were bowled out for 136 with Jimmy Anderson finishing with 6-47 England built and commanding 1st innings lead with newly promoted #3 local batsman Ian Bell scoring a fluent 53. Steven Finn, back from the cricketing wilderness, was the main destroyer in Australia’s 2nd innings with fairytale figures of 6 for 79 Ian Bell and Joe Root knocked calmly steered England to their target of 121 giving England a 2-1 lead.
The 4th test at Trent Bridge produced arguably the most dramatic opening session Ashes history. Stuart Broad, leading the attack in the absence of James Anderson, produced one of the best bowling displays in English cricket history finishing with 8 for 15. Backed up by incredible slip fielding and some rash Australian strokeplay England bowled Australia out for just 60 runs. Joe Root again led the way with the bat scoring his 2nd century of the series. As Australia threatened a comeback in their 2nd innings England looked to all rounder Ben Stokes to produce something special with the ball. He didn’t disappoint and ripped the heart out of the Asutralians with 6 wickets. As the side returned to the ground on the 3rd morning Mark Wood bowled Nathan Lyon to regain the Ashes as they took an unassailable 3-1 series lead.
Australia put in a spirited performance at The Oval to win in 4 days and regain some pride. The match will be remembered for the emotional departure of Australia captain Michael Clarke. He received a guard of honour as he walked to the wicket on day one for what proved to be his final innings in an Australian shirt.
