Unity and Duke, a fine pair of Percheron draft horses at work soiling up the potato crop at the Bawdeswell Estates Farm, Bawdeswell, near Norwich, Norfolk, UK, 11th July 1955. The sight of farm horses at work on the land is becoming rare, as more and more farms become mechanised. Now horses are only to be seen on some large farms where they are kept for odd jobs, on hill farms where the use of machinery is sometimes not practicable and on the very small holdings which do not warrant the expense of machines. Even on the Bawdeswell Estates farm, owned by Lieutenant Colonel QE Gurney, where more than 20 Percherons used to be kept, only one team, Unity (13) and Duke (12) are now retained.
