Tournament Overview
UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, the 14th edition of Europe’s premier women’s national team tournament, took place in Switzerland from 2 to 27 July 2025. The competition featured 16 teams across eight cities and venues, including Basel, Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Thun, and Sion. The tournament combined intense group stage drama with high-stakes knockout action.
Road to the Final
England, defending champions, navigated a challenging path: they fought through group play and overcame Sweden in the quarter-finals via penalties, then edged past Italy in extra time in the semi-final. In the final held at St. Jakob-Park, England and Spain drew 1–1 after extra time before England emerged victorious with a 3–1 win in the penalty shootout.
Champions Embrace Glory
By retaining the title, England made history as the first side to successfully defend the Women’s Euro and to win a major tournament abroad—a feat unmatched by any senior English side. Historic individual performances helped seal the win: Hannah Hampton, named Player of the Match, made key saves in the shootout; Chloe Kelly netted the decisive penalty; and Aitana Bonmatí was honored as Player of the Tournament, while Michelle Agyemang claimed the Young Player award.
Legacy & Cultural Impact
The tournament broke new ground with record attendance and fan engagement, marking a pivotal moment for the growth of women’s football across Europe.
