Born on 14 May 1979 in County Kildare, Ireland, Ruby Walsh was part of a race loving family and went on to follow in the footsteps of his jockey father. He showed great talent from an early age, winning amateur titles throughout the 90s, and in 2000, won the Grand National at his first attempt. He was just 20 at the time and stormed Papillon, a horse trained by his father, over the finish line to victory. The father and son duo then went on to win the Irish Grand National with Commanche Court the same year.

Multiple career highlights followed in 2004 and 2005 when Ruby Walsh won three of the four Nationals including the Irish on Numbersixvalverde, the Welsh on Silver Birch and the English on Hedgehunter. While he was beaten in the Scottish National on Cornish Rebel, he had enjoyed earlier success at that race back in 2002, making him the only jockey currently riding to have won all four Nationals.

Ruby Walsh is well-known in the racing industry for his appearance at Cheltenham Festival having ridden 59 winners at this event.
